We’ve read two stories yesterday that “clicked” together. One was Seth Godin’s post on media choices and how one must now deal with scarcity of attention. Another was a NYT story on the Disney.com deal with Youtube. It turns out that Disney has incredible content, as expected, but they don’t have kids’ “ears” anymore – incredibly enough for people over 30, Disney apparently doesn’t resonate as strongly and Youtube does. On the other hand, Disney brings Youtube some credibility with advertisers and families (the latter worry their kids only go on Youtube to watch what they perceive as useless, mindless, purposeless videos). In the hunt for attention, new media companies turn to content and content turns to new media. What can long-term investors make of this for the foreseeable future? Not much, we’d venture, since this market is too dynamic to call out clear winners. While we always remember that sometimes the smart action is inaction – “doing something by doing nothing“, that is, studying more and waiting for the “fat pitch” – another way to think about it is to consider focusing somewhere else. No matter who wins the content vs. distribution battles (Facebook? Apple? Microsoft? Google? Someone else we haven’t heard of yet?), it seems certain that the quantity/ complexity of web and data traffic in general can only increase, and companies providing infrastructure and solutions for those markets are not at all in risk of being “fads”: Cisco, Intel, Microsoft etc.

Certainly not the only source around for interesting interviews with business leaders, but it’s top-notch and we hadn’t discussed it yet. The London Business School’s Business Strategy Review (BSR) magazine/ website has a “World Business Leaders Series” worth spending some time on.

One highlight is the interview with Dr. Chris Gibson-Smith (embedded in this post), Chairman of the London Stock Exchange. We highlight in this post several excerpts worth considering – it’s intended for business in general, but can also be framed for the specifics of investment management.

Here’s the 7:41 video (highlights below):

Highlights:

- His life history is interesting: the balance of science and business shifting over the years, and it clearly influenced the highlight below:

- “I’ve worked in half a dozen industries in depth, and I’ve found the same thing wherever I go: every sector has its own technical knowledge, and you have to master that knowledge, otherwise you can’t be in the sector. But above that, the thing that is true particularly as you rise to levels of leadership and senior management, it’s the ability to think and act. The thinking creates the context, the framework, the vision, the intention; but it has no meaning unless you act. But the action has no focus unless you’ve thought. And it’s this balance between deep thought and precise action that produces effective results.“ — We’d add that this can be true as long as incentives are aligned, and the environment (including the teamwork) is positive and so on – but he mentioned the teamwork part below.

- He then talked about how he was kind of surprised that he was getting successful in business, and continuously so, and the surprise was due to the fact that he was so involved in the day-to-day. So he stepped back to wonder why it happened, and his takeaway is very interesting. According to him, he found in this exercise that one is successful or not “because of the quality of the people you worked with and the way you worked with them. Overwhelmingly it was the way in which you interacted with people that was at the center of one’s ability to contribute. And unquestionably I learned that in business – it’s [also] true in life – and it remains the most important thing about doing business for me.”

- Finally, a very interesting take on his duties as Chairman and leader, which show his specific skill set or strong points (and it makes sense given his “scientific method” past). It may not work for everyone, but it’s his way: I’m emphatically clear on my duties as leader. So I carry an un-assignable responsibility for the future of my organizations. It is not dilutable, but it’s completely shareable. So I think a great deal and then I involve people in the organization and they solve all the questions. My real task is to figure out the questions and then give it to other people to work out the answers, and I think I do that in a repeated pattern wherever I go.”

We’re glad to post a recent story from new Blogroll inductee Simoleon Sense. This blog is a great source for thought-provoking, multidisciplinary everything. This post is a video interview with James Simons of Renaissance Technologies, the famous “quant” fund. Mr. Simons’ talk goes about how he started his life with a passion for mathematics and how that eventually led him to investments. We’ve embedded the video and highlighted a few moments inside.

Back to Simoleon Sense: in the “Dear Reader” section for new readers, blog author Miguel Barbosa says he is “blogging to challenge the conventional ‘silo’ approach to learning.(…) I’m a renaissance thinker, an aspiring polymath, and a diligent researcher – as such I believe in the importance of consilience. Successful decision making centers on understanding problems and searching for solutions via a broad frame work of mental models.” - We agree, and given his history and company name, James Simons probably does too.

The video (1h 03min)

We like the way Mr. Simons has built Renaissance and its culture. The MIT host jokes that the world’s best Math and Physics “departments” belong to Renaissance, but that wouldn’t be enough. Mr. Simons highlights that he always wanted to build a company with “the best possible people, no compartmentalization (or “silos” as Mr. Barbosa says), with an open atmosphere, with everyone sharing information and what they’re doing.” That is still not enough: he highlights he’s paranoid about “having the best infrastructure in place – office space, technology, resources – and about paying people very well but based almost exclusively on overall company profit” (to foster collaboration).

He then briefly spoke about his foundation, where he is now full-time (and “busier than ever”), and again the concern with fundamental, basic science is clear. Not surprisingly, the former Math researcher and teacher is very concerned about Math education in the US.

Finally, he closes the talk with 4 “principles”, of which we highlight number 3. That search for the “truth”, for solving problems, for being the first to do something is something we’ve seen in most brilliant and driven people. Unfortunately the Q&A session that follows is mostly rubbish… The principles in summary:

1) Do something new.

2) Collaborate with the best people you possibly can. “Working with these people is FUN”.

3) Be guided by beauty. “(…) it’s a terrific feeling and a beautiful thing to do something right, like solving a math problem“, he says.

4) Don’t give up.

In it we quote from a 1998 Warren Buffett talk to Florida University MBA students that is simply a must-see. It’s a very candid talk in which Mr. Buffett discusses not only the fundamental aspects of value investing in a bit more detail than we get nowadays, but also some sector and company-specific opinions that, again, he now seems more reluctant to share outside of the Berkshire letters to shareholders. We post the 10 videos inside with all-Buffett footage, but here’s a link to a full, complete version at Google Video (which we couldn’t embed) and <a title="Full transcript of Buffett's 1998 talk to Florida U. Video number 10 alone is worth watching and sharing with friends, and not just those in the financial industry: he proposes a mental exercise about the “ovarian lottery” that’s really thought-provoking.

One month or so ago we received a newsletter from another asset manager with links to TED talks by Sir Ken Robinson. Today is a holiday in Rio (yet another one), and our state has been hit with torrential rain and subsequent land slides that killed over 650 people - the type of tragedy that unfortunately keeps occurring in Brazil. We can't help but be reminded of the power of education in changing societies: it's not all about short-term economic growth. It's not just "any" education either, although Brazil is still at such a low level that literacy rates still matter, it's about the quality of education as well. That's the subject of the inspiring and often funny talks inside. We hope you will enjoy them and think about the issue as it applies to your country.

We love it when readers send us great material, and when they’re 16 years old we’re even more impressed. This video is a very well-crafted, 4-minute summary of and ad for Steven Johnson’s new book (same name as our post). There’s also an 18-minute TED talk (July 2010) that expands somewhat and exemplifies. In the TED video Mr. Johnson gets a bit more “pro-crowdsourcing”, in the sense that there’s an obvious trade-off between intellectual property protection vs. opening up to collaborative business models. His last example of how Sputnik’s success inspired a wave of innovations and the way he “closes the circle” in the end makes for a very entertaining presentation (in the “aren’t we all geeks?” sense). But this wouldn’t be a Buysiders.com post if we didn’t have a word of caution: as we’ve posted here almost a year ago, there are limits to crowdsourcing that should be minded before launching any type of “open” initiative.

Update (April 6th, 2010): Please see inside for Mike Burry’s op-ed in the New York Times ranting on the Fed (Greenspan specifically) for not seeing the crisis develop.

On tour to promote his book “The Big Short“, Michael Lewis interviews have been popping up all over the Internet. You can find some of the best inside. Required reading is this excerpt from the book at Vanity Fair’s website. Great stuff, we especially liked this bit: “I hated discussing ideas with investors,” (Mike Burry said), “because I then become a Defender of the Idea, and that influences your thought process. Once you became an idea’s defender, you had a harder time changing your mind about it.”

Have a great Easter Sunday!

UPDATE: Mike Burry wrote an op-ed in the New York Times recently on how he saw the crisis and why the Fed should have seen it too. We especially like this bit: “I demanded daily collateral settlement — if positions moved in our favor, I wanted cash posted to our account the next day. This was something I knew that Goldman Sachs and other derivatives dealers did not demand of AAA-rated A.I.G.”. Not only did he get the intellectual challenge right, but he also followed through quite well in terms of execution. Impressive enough, and all by himself.
